How to Use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

Getting Started with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®

A no-fuss, friendly guide for real-life projects

You don’t need to be a decorator or a DIY expert to use Chalk Paint®. If you’ve got a piece of furniture, a brush, and a little curiosity — you’re already there.

We love this paint because it’s simple. Really simple. No sanding, no priming. Just a tin, a bit of time, and your own touch.

Step 1: Wipe it Down

Seriously — that’s all. Grab a cloth, clean off the dust or any old polish, and you’re good to go.

Step 2: Open the Tin and Stir

Not everything needs to be complicated. Stir it well, dip in your brush, and start painting.

It goes on smooth, and it covers really well. One coat is often enough.

Step 3: Let it Dry

Put the brush down, make a cuppa, and wait 20–30 minutes. It’ll be dry before you finish your tea.

Step 4: Add Wax or Lacquer (if you want to)

To keep it protected:

  • Use Clear Wax for a soft finish (great on drawers, frames, or sideboards)
  • Use Lacquer if it’s going to be knocked about (like tables or floors)

Tip: Don’t load your brush with too much wax — a little goes a long way. Wipe off the extra with a clean cloth

Step 5: Make It Yours

Want to get creative? You don’t need to — but you can.

We like using:

  • IOD Transfers for something pretty
  • Stencils if you want detail without drama
  • Decoupage papers for a layered look

Start small. One drawer. One idea. You’ll surprise yourself.

You’re Not Doing It Wrong

This paint is designed to be easy. If it doesn’t look perfect? Good. That’s part of the charm. Every brushstroke is yours — and that’s the point.
