How to Apply Matt Lacquer

Allow your Chalk Paint® to dry fully before you begin. Stir the lacquer gently — never shake — and apply in thin, even coats with a good quality brush or roller. Allow each coat to dry fully (around 1–2 hours) before applying the next. For surfaces like dining tables that see heavy daily use, two to three coats will give you the most durable result.

Pro Tip

Lightly sand between coats with a fine 320-grit sandpaper for an ultra-smooth, professional finish. Wipe away any dust before applying the next coat — it makes all the difference. Because Matt Lacquer slightly deepens the colour of your Chalk Paint®, it's worth doing a small test patch first to make sure you love the result.

Gloss vs. Matt — Which Finish Is Right for You?

Both finishes are equally tough and durable — it really comes down to the look you're after. Matt Lacquer gives a flat, velvety finish and will slightly deepen the colour of your Chalk Paint®, similar to the effect of Chalk Paint® Wax — beautiful for vintage, aged, and natural interiors. Gloss Lacquer dries completely clear with a light polished sheen, preserving your Chalk Paint® colour exactly as painted. If you love that soft, matte depth, Matt is your answer.
