Saltwash Chopping Board Makeover

We all love a quick weekend win, and this little Boho Saltwash chopping board makeover is exactly that. With a dash of Saltwash, a bit of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, and a simple stencil, you can turn the most ordinary board into something textured, interesting, and totally “you.” It’s the kind of small project that makes your kitchen feel more loved — and yes, it really did start life as a $5 Kmart board.

What You'll Need

  • 2 x wooden chopping boards (mine are from Kmart)
  • Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Original
  • Saltwash texture additive
  • Annie Sloan Meadow Flowers Stencil
  • Plastic scraper or palette knife
  • Annie Sloan Clear Wax
  • Optional: Annie Sloan Dark or Black Wax
  • Painter's tape

How I Did It

  1. Tape it off: I masked the top section of each board to keep the original timber exposed — it adds contrast and keeps that organic feel.
  2. Base coat: Painted the lower section with Annie Sloan's Original Chalk Paint. Let that dry.
  3. Texture magic: Mixed Saltwash into more Original paint to create a thick, frosting-like paste. The kind that holds its shape without being gluggy.
  4. Stencil + scrape: Positioned the Meadow Flowers stencil where I wanted it. Then I scraped the paint/Saltwash mix over the stencil using a plastic scraper — keeping it even and level with the stencil.
  5. Peel + reveal: Carefully removed the stencil while the paint was still wet. Let it dry completely.
  6. Finishing touches: You can sand off little raised bits or imperfections, but I honestly think they make the piece more charming.
  7. Wax on: Once dry, I applied a layer of Clear Wax, then highlighted the textured design with a mix of Dark and Black Wax to give it depth and dimension.
  8. Style it: Rest them on your bench, prop them on a shelf, or hang them on the wall. Trust me — they make a statement.

Why I Love It

This DIY takes something super basic and gives it that boho-but-chic energy. It's layered, it's textured, it's imperfect — just like all good things. And you don't need a shed full of tools or a weekend off to do it.
