Annie Sloan Chalk Paint - How to Use It, Tips & Inspiration

What is Chalk Paint?
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® is a decorative paint designed for furniture, walls, floors, and beyond. Renowned for its velvety matte finish and ease of use, it adheres to most surfaces without sanding or priming. Perfect for creating layered, vintage, contemporary, rustic, or modern looks—it’s the ultimate paint for DIY lovers and pro upcyclers alike.

What You'll Need
- Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® (in your chosen colour)
- Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® Brush or Flat Brush
- Drop sheet or protective covering for workspace
- Stirring stick (don’t shake the tin)
- A damp cloth (for cleaning surfaces)
- Chalk Paint® Wax (for sealing) or Lacquer (for floors or high-use areas)
- Optional: Sandpaper, Water Mister, Sponge, Stencils, Saltwash®, etc.

Lets Get Started
Step 1: Prep the Surface
No sanding or priming needed in most cases! Just wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove dust or grease. For shiny or laminate surfaces, a quick scuff sand can help with adhesion.
Step 2: Stir, Don’t Shake
Stir the paint thoroughly to mix any natural pigments that may have settled. Avoid shaking the tin to prevent air bubbles.
Step 3: Apply Your Paint
Dip your brush in and go for it! Chalk Paint is forgiving—use a criss-cross motion for texture or long, smooth strokes for a more refined look. It dries quickly, so work in sections.
Step 4: Second Coat (Optional)
Once the first coat is dry (about 30 minutes to an hour), add a second coat if needed, especially for high-contrast or porous surfaces.

Claire’s Tips & Creative Hacks
- For a soft coastal wash, dilute Chalk Paint with a little water and brush lightly over your base colour.
- Want a rustic French look? Apply paint thickly and use a hairdryer between coats to create subtle crackling.
- Use a water mister while painting to blend colours and extend working time.
- Chalk Paint can go over leather, metal, laminate, fabric—even concrete!
- Don’t be afraid to experiment—layer colours, distress edges, stencil, or use Saltwash® for texture.
